Classroom Discipline
Because this is a classroom community, we will work
together to create classroom rules
during the first week of school. These guidelines will include being kind and
cooperative with others, keeping hands and feet to oneself, and following
directions. We will learn to work out our problems using words to express our
emotions and keeping bodies under control.
There are two types of expectations in our classroom. One is for each individual child, and one is for the classroom community as a whole. Each child will have a clothespin with his or her name on it on our classroom “Behavior” chart. Each student will begin on green each school day. Children will have opportunities to earn a different color throughout each day when they are caught making good choices. A child will be moved to blue or even purple if he or she makes a good choice at school. On the other hand a student may lose the color green as well if he or she does not make a good choice. If a student is moved to yellow, the child will receive a verbal warning. The student may also be moved to orange or red as well. An appropriate consequence may occur, and sometimes a note may be sent home indicating the behavior explaining the situation. This behavior can serve as both a positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement.
For the first half of the school years, a behavior report will be sent home each Friday will all students. The report will continue to be sent home after Christmas only if necessary.
In order to promote a healthy, classroom community we all children are working together and helping one another, we will also have a class bucket. At the end of each day we will talk about or day, if the class as a whole displays friendship, kindness, and respect during the day, a rock will be added to the bucket. This corresponds with the book Have You Filled a Bucket Today. This book encourages positive behavior as the children perceive how easy and rewarding it is to express kindness, appreciation, and love on a daily basis. Once the class reaches a certain number of rocks in the bucket, I will treat the children with a special snack and/or activity to celebrate!
