Class Information
Please ensure that your child knows the method of
transportation that he or she will take home each day. If your child rides a
bus, please make sure that he or she is aware of the bus number. If, for any
reason, there is a transportation change, even for one day, you must either send a written note to me (in the Take-Home
Folder) or call the school office with the change. I cannot accept a verbal
message from you child for safety reasons.
Each child will have a Take-Home Folder. The folder will be used to hold any papers, including class work, homework, awards, etc. Any papers in this folder may stay at home unless marked to sign and return. Please check this folder daily! I will also check each child’s folder on a daily basis. So, if there is any information that you would like to notify me of, please include a written note in the folder as this is the best way to reach me.
First grade homework consists of having your child read at least ten minutes each night! A reading log will be sent home with your child for each trimester. Please record the books that he or she has read. It is okay if it takes several days to completely finish reading a book! It is okay to only record one chapter each night if your child is reading a longer chapter book. It is also okay to record books that YOU have read TO your child! The reading log is to be turned into me at the end of each month.
In addition to reading daily, spelling words will also be sent home with your child. Spelling is to be practiced in preparation for the weekly Spelling Test each Friday. Spellingcity.com is a great way for the children to practice their words. The website will be updated weekly with their spelling words. The purpose of each Spelling Test is to improve upon your child’s phonic and spelling skills.
Each child will have math facts to practice once a week. The completed homework assignment is to be returned the following school day. It is expected for your child to visit Renaissance Place at least twice a week. This website offers daily facts practice (Math Facts in a Flash) as well an enrichment program (Accelerated Math).
Angel of the Week is a special part of our classroom! Each child will have a special week when they may bring in photographs from home and/or something special from home, such as a teddy bear or toy, to share with the class. The child may bring an item in for each day of the week. This is an opportunity for each child to have “Show and Tell” as well as for the students to get to know one another.
We love to celebrate birthdays! On your child’s birthday, he or she may bring in a treat to share with the class. We would love to enjoy them during our school day! If your child has a summer birthday please feel free to use his or her half birthday as an opportunity to send in birthday treats as well. (Please try to avoid treats with nuts, as we may have children with nut allergies in our classroom).
Another special part of our classroom is our class pet (stuffed animal)! “Stripes the Tiger” is a special friend who will join us each day in our exciting, learning adventure! Each student will have the opportunity to take our class pet home for one weekend. A journal will go with our pet wherever he goes. During your weekend with our pet, please have your child write and/or draw about his or her adventure with our pet. Our class pet will be a well-traveled friend by the end of the year! This is a very exciting way to develop your child’s writing and journal skills throughout the school year!
